Tissue Paper Roses

Although this craft idea is easy to make - it's more suitable for preschool crafts than for toddlers - unless you want to help out that is...

Note: Adjust the materials' quantities below to suit the number of roses your child would like to make.

What You Need:

  • tissue paper cut into 10cm/4inch circles - each rose needs 4 or 5 circles
  • paddle pop sticks or similar
  • pipe cleaners cut into quarters - each rose needs 1 quarter piece
  • glue stick - optional

What To Do:

  1. Take one tissue paper circle at a time, roughly fold in half and then have again squashing the base of the "rose" together as you go.
  2. Do the same with the next circle - but this time do the folding around the first circle that's already been folded.
  3. Repeat with another 2 or 3 tissue paper circles. To make this a little easier your child can put a little glue on each circle to glue them all together in the middle and then fold them all together.
  4. Once your "rose" is complete, tie the rose head to it's stem - the paddle pop stick - with the pipe cleaner piece. Do this as tightly as possible.
  5. To give these roses to someone special as a gift - simply put a piece of floral foam into a tin can and insert roses. The can can be decorated with a piece of ribbon, stickers or even painted and decorated with glitter.

Once your child has made a few roses, they can then place them into clean plastic bottles, tin cans or even decorated toilet paper rolls. Here are a few ideas to get them started.

What You Need:

  • an empty, clean and dry can
  • small piece of floral foam
  • decorations of choice - anything you can find - optional
What To Do:
  1. Push a small piece of floral foam into the can.
  2. Insert the roses.
  3. Decorate the can with stickers, ribbon, paint or glitter - whatever your child would like to try.
  4. Or alternatively, glue a special note onto a paddle pop stick and insert into the foam with the flowers for personalized and unique Valentines day gifts.

What You Need:

  • mini red paper patty pans/muffin papers
  • white or green straws - or paddle pop sticks
  • double sided tape

What To Do:

  1. Turn the paper patty pans inside out - so that the color side becomes the "front" of the flower
  2. Stick a small piece of double sided tape on the back
  3. Peel off the double sided tape backing paper
  4. Stick straw onto the piece of double sided tape
  5. To give as a gift - either give as is or decorate as much as your toddler's attention span will allow.
Make little "flower pots" out of small baby food cans with a piece of floral foam inside it - or paint and decorate a small box or plastic container.
Let your toddler make a simple gift tag - like the one below - to write a little "love note" to Mommy or Daddy or another special person in their lives. A piece of ribbon can complete the gift.
