Christmas Dinner Table Setting

Why not let your children make their own table setting for Christmas dinner. These easy homemade decoration ideas can be made from recyclable or cheap items.

Your kids could tie the whole setting together - not literally - by using the same kind of ribbon on all the crafts.

Candles for the Table

These are beautiful to look at and they're so easy for kids to make. This craft activity is suitable for preschoolers, although kids must be supervised around fire at all times - if you choose to light a real candle at Christmas dinner. They're intended to be made as a table decoration and are not to be played with. Supervise children using the glass jar for this craft.

Note: This craft activity requires drying time for the rice to dry, before it can be completed.

What You Need:

  • empty and clean baby food jar
  • rice
  • food colouring - red and green is ideal
  • 2 zip lock plastic bags
  • 2 plastic plates and spoons
  • glitter
  • tea light candle - optional

What To Do:

  1. Divide the rice evenly, and put into the 2 plastic zip lock bags.
  2. Pour in a little food coloring - 1 color for each bag - and shake.
  3. Spread the rice out onto the plates and allow to dry - this won't take too long - give it a stir every now and then.
  4. Once dry, put a little of each colour in the jar and add glitter (for magical Christmas candles)
  5. Place the tea light candle on top - or alternatively make a 'candle' out of cardboard - or salt dough

Non-Candles for the Table

These are perfect for toddlers to make - and they're safe too!

Note: This craft activity requires 'cooking/drying' time of over 2 hours, before it can be completed.

What You Need:

  • empty and clean baby food tins - or other small cans - as many as you've got or want
  • 1 batch of salt dough - colour is optional
  • wooden skewers, cocktail sticks or toothpicks - sharp bits cut off
  • small pieces of tissue paper - red or orange is ideal
  • sticky tape

What To Do:

  1. Make up a batch of salt dough with this recipe - let your toddler help too! What ever doesn't get used for this craft activity, can be used for another.
  2. Let your child fill the tin/s with the dough.
  3. Push in the wooden stick - somewhere near the middle.
  4. Following the baking steps in the salt dough recipe - dry in the oven until hard.
  5. Once cooled - stick a piece of tissue paper onto the stick so that it somewhat resembles a flame. Your toddler will love it.
