Easy Homemade Finger Paint Recipes

With these easy finger paint recipes you can make your own paint at home.

These recipes require common and cheap household ingredients and very little time and effort.



They are excellent for kids fingerpainting - especially for toddlers, as only safe ingredients are used.

They are extremely easy to clean, are completely washable and do not stain clothing.

Easy Homemade Recipes

Cornflour / Cornstarch Finger Paint

This takes about 10 minutes to cook and has a beautiful thick velvety texture which feels great between fingers.

It is easy to apply with fingers and won't splash as much as thinner paints. It's very easy to clean.

Note: Depending on the amount you need - increase or decrease the quantities of this recipe.

What You Need:

  • 1 cup corn flour / corn starch
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • food colouring or tempera paint powder
  • small sealable containers
What To Do:
  1. Add flour and salt to saucepan and slowly add water, mixing with a whisk until all combined.
  2. Keep stirring over a medium heat, until mixture is smooth and thick.
  3. Once mixture has thickened remove from heat and allow to cool.
  4. Once cooled, separate the fingerpaint into small containers and colour with small amounts of either food colouring or tempera. If using tempera powder add a little water to combine.
  5. If paint is too thick, add small amounts of water and mix thoroughly, until you get the desired consistency.
  6. Once kids have finished finger painting, store remainder in the refrigerator for a few days.

Plain Flour Finger Paint

This recipe only takes about 5 minutes to cook and has a thick smooth texture. It is easy to apply and easy to clean.

This finger paint can crack and flake off if applied too thickly.

Note: Depending on the amount you need - increase or decrease the quantities of this recipe.

What You Need:

  • 1/2 cup plain flour
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • food colouring or tempera paint powder
  • 1 tablespoon dishwashing liquid - optional
  • small sealable containers
What To Do:
  1. Add flour and salt to saucepan and slowly add water, mixing with a whisk until all combined.
  2. Heat over a medium heat, stirring continuously with whisk to prevent lumps.
  3. Once mixture has thickened and is smooth remove from heat and allow to cool.
  4. Once cooled, mix in the dishwashing liquid - optional. It will give the paint a smoother consistency and a glossy finish when dry.
  5. Separate into small containers and colour with small amounts of either food colouring or tempera powder. If using tempera add a little water to combine.
  6. Once kids have had fun fingerpainting, store remainder in the refrigerator for a few days.

Best Ever Homemade Finger Paint

This recipe only takes about 10 minutes to cook. It has a beautifully smooth texture which you can make thick or thin.

Note: Depending on the amount you need - increase or decrease the quantities of this recipe. To save time, you can make larger batches to store away for when needed.

What You Need:

  • 1/2 cup plain flour
  • 1/2 cup cornflour / cornstarch
  • 2 1/2 cups water + extra for thinner paint
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • food colouring or tempera paint powder
  • 1 tablespoon dishwashing liquid - optional
  • small sealable containers - only if storing
What To Do:
  1. Add plain flour, cornflour/cornstarch and salt to saucepan and only add 1/2 cup of the water. Mix into a thick paste.
  2. Turn on the heat (gentle heat), and add 1 cup of water to the saucepan, mixing with a whisk to combine and prevent lumps.
  3. Whisk continuously until paint mixture starts to thicken and then continue mixing with a wooden spoon.
  4. Once paint mixture is thick and smooth remove from the heat.
  5. Add another 1/2 cup of water (more may be needed to reach desired consistency) and mix thoroughly to combine. Allow to cool.
  6. Once cooled, mix in the dishwashing liquid - optional. It will give the paint a smoother consistency and a glossy finish when dry.
  7. Separate the paint into small containers and colour with small amounts of either food colouring or tempera. If using tempera powder add a little more water to combine.
  8. Once kids have had fun painting, store remainder in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Variations to Homemade Finger Paint Recipes

  • Adding a few drops of dishwashing liquid will give it a smoother consistency, and a glossy finish when dry.
