Easy Christmas Ornaments for Kids to Make:

Important Note

It's important to note that all these crafts are ideas only. You can adapt any part of any craft idea we present - make it simpler or more complex - and alter it to use the products you already have on hand.

Help your child to do these steps only if they require it. Let them try to do it by themselves, unless stated. It's easier to show your child by making one too - plus it's fun and your child will enjoy the time you spend together.

Salt Dough Cookies

Note: For this craft activity you need to make salt dough first. Click here for our homemade salt dough recipe. Making the dough might well become your child's favorite part to this craft.

Note: This activity requires cooking time of over 2 hours. Therefore it's best spread out over 2 days.

PART 1

What You Need:

  • 1 batch of salt dough
  • rolling pin
  • baking paper lined oven trays
  • Christmassy cookie cutters of choice - such as tree, gingerbread man, angel, star etc.
  • skewer

What To Do:

  1. Make a batch of salt dough using our recipe - your child will love helping. 1 Batch makes about 20 ornaments - but will depend on the size of your cutters.
  2. Roll out the dough to about 2-3mm thick.
  3. Cut out as many shapes as you can with cookie cutters - continue combining and rolling the dough scraps until all used.
  4. Place all the cut-out ornaments onto trays, and make a small hole with the skewer near the top for hanging.
  5. Place in a preheated 120°C / 250°F oven for 2 - 3 hours until firm. Turn ornaments halfway through drying time.
